Brian Foster earned an opportunity to fight for the lightweight title after winning the WSOF 25 one-night, eight-man tournament and now he knows the date that he’ll battle for the belt.
Foster (25-8) will face champion Justin Gaethje (15-0) in the main event of WSOF 29, according to a press release put out by the promotion.
WSOF 29 takes place March 12 at Bank of Colorado Arena, Greeley, Colo. The main card airs on NBCSN following prelims on MMAjunkie.
Foster’s run through the tournament was unusual. He dropped a first round bout with Joao Zeferino, but reentered the tournament when Mike Ricci was unable to compete in his semifinal bout. Foster picked up a semifinal win over Luis Palomino and followed that up with a payback win over Zeferino in the finals to earn the shot at the title.
The hard-hitting Gaethje has stopped seven of his eight WSOF opponents with strikes. His lone decision victory in the promotion came against former UFC star Melvin Guillard at WSOF 15 in November 2014. His two most recent bouts were against Palomino, with both wins coming by TKO.
