It’s July and that means the Fitness Olympia is approaching quickly. It also means I’m in full-blown contest prep with cardio, dieting, and supplementation, making any necessary changes based on my progress.
Speaking of progress, it’s something most people are impatient about and always try to rush. Coaching others for contest prep and lifestyle dieting helps place me in their shoes. At the beginning of my own contest prep, I always want to see results immediately, too. I’ve had to take a step back and remind myself that nothing happens overnight, the same thing I have to tell any of my clients.
When done properly, fat loss should be a slow and steady process to ensure you’re not losing any lean muscle tissue. When getting ready for a fitness competition, the fat loss goal is more extreme than it would be for lifestyle dieting, so the process is obviously harder. When I need an extra boost in my own progress for a competition, as I do right now, I structure my SAN supplementation differently than I do during my off-season. The most recent addition I’ve made is taking Yohimbine every morning along with Pure CLA 1250, and L-Carnitine Liquid.
Yohimbine specifically targets “stubborn” fat by increasing blood flow when exercising. That means when I take it before my morning fasted cardio, it allows my body to naturally burn more fat while helping to increase my metabolic rate and energy/calorie expenditure.
Pure CLA 1250 is conjugated linoleic acid fatty acid which is a dietary fat that helps prevent fat cells from growing larger by increasing enzyme production that can affect fat accumulation. CLA, in conjunction with diet and exercise, can speed up the fat-loss process.
L-Carnitine Liquid has been a staple during all my contest-prep phases, so it plays a big role in my Olympia prep as well. It’s best taken on an empty stomach in the morning about 30-60 minutes before your first meal. I make sure to take L-carnitine before I start any cardio, right when I wake up in the morning. Research also shows that L-carnitine is best used in conjunction with exercise because it is utilized best when the body produces collagen. Exercise naturally increases production of endorphins and serotonin which aid collagen production. When collagen is produced, L-carnitine is more fully utilized and available for increasing fat burning and muscle retention while suppressing appetite and reducing cellulite.
Fat loss is more of a marathon than a sprint overall, so it requires patience, but there are ways to reach your fat-loss goals faster. This doesn’t mean things will happen overnight or without a proper diet and exercise program. It does mean that a well-planned strategy can produce quicker and more effective results.
