I always get asked if supplements are necessary. As a personal trainer and nutrition consultant, I highly suggest them for optimum results. The reason why is because it is extremely hard to get all the necessary nutrients from whole foods alone. Supplements give you a more controlled and maximal advantage to support your training needs.
The list could get extensive on exactly which supplements you may need that pertain to your goals, or you could keep it very minimal and basic.
Depending on what cycle of my training I am on, my supplement needs vary. But there are staples that I feel are most important to always have on hand. I will narrow these staples down to 3 items that I feel are beneficial to everyone that train and to provide better results.
- Whey or Plant Based Protein: This is a low calorie way to add quality protein to your meal scheduling without the extra fat and carbs. Consuming the correct amount of protein is crucial in building muscles. It is also very convenient and cost effective per serving.
- Performance Glutamine: This supplement is crucial to muscle recovery, repair and is also anti catabolic. I don’t dare skip Glutamine especially after an intense leg workout – Otherwise I won’t be able to walk!
- BCAA’s: These are the building blocks that fuel your muscle growing efforts. Training without supplying sufficient amounts of BCAA’s Pre, Intra, and Post is like driving a car without any gas.
There you have it. If you must narrow down your supplement list down to the absolute bare minimum, I would not forget to add these three.
