What is D-Aspartic Acid?
D-aspartic acid (DAA) is a form of aspartic acid, a non-essential amino acid. Unlike L-aspartic acid which plays a role in protein synthesis, D-aspartic acid plays a role in hormone production, particularly testosterone. By increasing the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) which stimulates Leydig cells, D-aspartic acid effectively increases testosterone production directly in the testes.
As a hormone-boosting nutrient, D-aspartic acid has been shown to be effective at improving testosterone production in male athletes, sedentary men, and men with low testosterone within one to two weeks of use. It also has positive effects on healthy growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) production. With notable increases in testosterone, GH, and IGF-1 production, there are potent athletic benefits such as improved muscle growth and workout capacity, as well as libido- and fertility-enhancing potential.
Who should use it?
Men older than 21-years-old and men with lower than average testosterone production or those who suffer from infertility can benefit most from D-aspartic acid. Studies have shown an over 40% increase in testosterone production within just two weeks of use, and it has been shown to increase both the volume and motility of sperm in previously infertile men. Testosterone appears to stay elevated up to around 10% after discontinuing use.
When and how should it be used?
D-aspartic acid appears to be most effective when used for three to four weeks at a time followed by a one- to two-week break or “off cycle” before starting again. Dosages of up to three grams per day are optimal and should not be exceeded; the “more is better” approach is not true with D-aspartic acid and may adversely affect testosterone, so three grams per day seems to be ideal for increased hormone production.
