What are guggulsterones?
Guggulsterones are plant sterols derived from the gummy resin of the guggul plant, Commiphora mukul. They have centuries of history being used in Ayurvedic medicine and have since been brought into more mainstream use by the sports nutrition industry because of their effect on body composition.
While guggulsterones have positive effects in the treatment of acne, due in part to their potent anti-inflammatory properties, it’s their effect on metabolism that’s most sought after. Their ability to help convert T4 into the more active T3 thyroid hormone have made them a must-have nutrient in the battle of the bulge.
Here are a few of their positive attributes:
- Promote healthy thyroid function
- Natural, non-stimulant metabolism booster
- Support healthy blood lipid levels and cholesterol metabolism
- Reduce effects of acne
- Inhibit inflammation
Who should use them?
From a metabolism-boosting and fat-burning perspective, guggulsterones are most effective for dieters and those looking to lose weight who’ve hit a plateau due to decreased metabolism as a potential result of reduced thyroid production (T3 conversion).
Guggulsterones can be used by just about anyone, though it’s recommended that you consult with your healthcare professional if you are or might become pregnant or if you’re currently using NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or prescription thyroid medication.
When and how should they be used?
Whether straight guggulsterones or a guggul-enhanced fat-burning formula, they’re normally best taken throughout the day (as recommended on product labels) and they should be consumed with food. They can be used on their own to help with increased metabolism and healthy cholesterol levels, but their effects can be amplified when combined with other fat-burning nutrients.
