My off-season has come to an end! I just got home from vacation where I was celebrating two years of marriage with my husband, and the end of our vacation (and my off-season) marked the beginning of my Olympia preparation.
Preparing for a contest, especially the Olympia, is very grueling and intense, so I like to live a little and enjoy food while on vacation, but I still keep most of my meals healthy. During this vacation, I enjoyed all of the little things that we usually can’t eat during my prep., like dessert every night. Olympia prep. is extremely challenging, so we both try to get our minds right in preparation for all the madness to come.
The resort where we stayed while on vacation did have a gym, but there were only a few cardio machines, and they were all taken most of the time. So, instead of waiting around for a cardio machine to open up or skipping out on cardio altogether, I decided to take my cardio to the stairwell. Some of the best cardio you can do requires no equipment at all, so don’t be afraid to take your cardio elsewhere, like to the sand if there is a beach nearby or to hills at a park. I was so thrilled for the change, and I burned more calories in half the time by running up and down stairs than I would have on the elliptical.
Another way to burn more calories while vacationing would be to challenge yourself to take the stairs everywhere you go, whether at the airport, shopping at the mall, or even to your hotel room instead of taking the escalators or elevators. We always avoid buffets and try to share most of our meals and entrees. I’ve found that most portions at restaurants are too large for just one person, so sharing helps us avoid overeating. Plus, that means we saved plenty of room for dessert (it was a vacation after all!). All of this helps us stay lean during our vacations. Give these tips a try for yourself; I know you won’t be disappointed.
For cardio variety, try any of these drills I did on the stairs:
- Toe Tap
- Single-Leg Hop
- Step-Up-and-Down Lunge
- Sprint Up and Jog Down
